Party Time
It might be a special birthday celebration or a Summer party, or Christmas might be just around the corner, but for whatever the reason a party is a great opportunity for friends, family and colleagues to get together and just have fun. My approach when photographing these events is generally relaxed and unobtrusive, to stand back and observe. My thinking is it's easier to capture those memorable moments when the photographer isn't shuffling people around and shouting "Say cheese..."

Model Shoot
In the Spring of 2016 I was lucky enough to spend a morning in London, shooting the beautiful Kristina. And whilst I'm more accustomed to photographing landscapes and travel-related scenes, I found the experience extremely satisfying. Here are a couple of examples from the shoot...

Model Shoot
Winter 2017 and I find myself back in my natural environment, the dance studio. Which is obviously a joke. Anyway, this time the shoot is with the beautiful and extremely talented Josie.

The Theatre
Like many photographers, I occasionally get called upon to shoot theatrical productions. This is especially common at Christmas time, and the actors are invariably quite short and dressed up as shepherds, farm animals or possibly angels. Sometimes, however, the productions are a bit grander, so here we have a few images from the West End productions of Flashdance and The Bodyguard. I was brought in to shoot stills for a production company who were filming the shows for television and marketing purposes. First up...

The Craftsman/Designer
I was recently on a train heading into London, and sitting across from me was a gentleman, and sitting next to him was a blue bag. I could see beautifully fashioned wooden things sticking out the top of the bag. I couldn't see what these things were, but I was intrigued. You don't often see beautifully fashioned wooden things sticking out of bags on a train heading into London, so I had to ask...
Turns out the gentleman was Geoff Fisher, a genuine craftsman/designer with a love of all things wood. He forages for wood in the woodlands of Buckinghamshire and then, back in his workshop, transforms it into whistles, catapults, skipping ropes and the most beautiful coat-hangers you could imagine. And from there it gets sent out to various shops around the world. Interesting people you meet on the train.

The Stunt Man
A recent shoot took me to Black Park in Buckinghamshire, the woodland location of choice for many a movie and TV show (and, if you listen carefully, you can almost hear Peter Cushing's Professor Van Helsing racing in a horse-drawn carriage towards sinister Castle Dracula).
Anyway, whilst there were no vampires on set that day there was one of the country's leading stunt co-ordinators in the shape of Crispin Layfield. Many professionals need up to date images of themselves, and stunt men are no different. And whilst it would have been much more interesting if he'd been engulfed in flames, or possibly hurling himself through a third-storey window (both of which he's more than capable of doing), what he actually wanted was just a simple, full-body shot. I thought a simple, full-body shot of him standing on top of a Sherman tank had a bit more oomph.

The Internet Entrepreneur
I was recently contacted by Chris Grant-Peterkin, the founder of The Visual Art Trader website, as he was after some new portrait imagery for a conference at which he is to speak. We chatted about what he needed/wanted, and and it soon became clear that we should be aiming for something classic & timeless, but also simple. With a suggestion of urban cool if possible. There's only one place to go if you're after something like that, and it's the No. 9 going around Hyde Park Corner...

After a while, and once we'd got the shot, a rest was in order. Though Chris couldn't get it out of his head that he was missing something...
Another recent subject is a gentleman called Simon Holt. He's an old friend, a thoroughly good guy, and I'm rather pleased with this shot of him. There's an aloof dignity there, and the black & white really gives the portrait a satisfyingly "classic" look.
WEDDING DAYS
These can be the happiest days of our lives, so let the photographs reflect that. My approach is to be as unobtrusive as possible as I go about capturing the moments that make the day so special.

The Bookend Portrait
A what? Well, this is what I call a Bookend Portrait, and it's a concept that's absolutely perfect for larger groups. Everyone is photographed individually (though obviously all in the same session) and then brought together for the final image, all through the wonders of Photoshop. It's fun & relaxed, you pick the shot you like (so no worries about wayward blinks ruining the shot), and the characters really do shine through.
